International Workshop "Pronouns and discourse prominence"

The International Workshop ‘Pronouns and discourse prominence’ takes place at the GRIMMWELT Kassel (Germany), October 01-03 2019, in the framework of the series ‘Workshops on Referential Expressions in Discourse (RED)’. It is organized by Klaus von Heusinger (Universität zu Köln) and Sofiana Lindemann ((née Chiriacescu) Universitatea Transilvania din Brașov).

Pronouns are of particular interest for linguistic analyses since, on the one hand, their lexical reduction and their specific grammatical features differentiate them from other word classes cross-linguistically. On the other hand, the wide range of possible pronominal functions establishes a number of pronominal subclasses. The workshop investigates the relation between pronouns and discourse prominence, assuming that the resolution of pronouns to a unique referent relies on the prominence ranking of individuals in the discourse.

The workshop wants to bring together different lines of research from psycholinguistics, formal syntax and semantics, typology, and diachrony.

The objective of the workshop is to integrate these different lines of research in order (i) to obtain a more comprehensive picture of pronominal elements from the point of view of different approaches, and (ii) to discuss the relationship of different grammatical aspects of lexical elements and their representation.

Organisation

The workshop is organized by Klaus von Heusinger (Universität zu Köln) and Sofiana Lindemann ((née Chiriacescu) Universitatea Transilvania din Brașov).

Support for this workshop comes from SFB 1252 Prominence in Language.
