Ebru Evcen

Guest at the Institute for German Language and Literature 1, Department Linguistics, and the CRC 1252 Prominence in Language.

Ebru Evcen is a second-year PhD student at the University of California San Diego (UCSD), Linguistics. She is mainly interested in syntax-semantics interface and experimental pragmatics. Her research focuses on how, as language unfolds, we incrementally build representations of the events described by that unfolding language and how speakers develop a sufficiently rich linguistic meaning during comprehension. The questions she is after are how do we derive meaning from a sentence, and how are these meanings represented in our mind? Currently, she works on comprehension of counterfactual conditionals in English where logic and pragmatics seem to be pointing in different directions.

During her research stay at the University of Cologne, she will collaborate with Prof. Dr. Klaus von Heusinger and his team under the CRC 1252 ‘Prominence in Language’ on pronoun resolution in Turkish from June 1, 2022, to July 15, 2022.
